The Scoop

First of all, thanks for visiting Architecture of Greater Binghamton. It's my hope that this site can become a resource into the history of some of the classic buildings in the Southern Tier/Northern Tier of Pennsylvania/Central New York region. Particular attention will be paid to the buildings in and around Binghamton, NY for the simple reason that it is where I live.

That being said, this project could not be done in just any location. Well, it could because architecture is everywhere, but I can hardly think of a more fitting place to chronicle than Binghamton. There is a lot of tarnished and forgotten beauty on nearly every street in Binghamton. Long ago a boom town, Binghamton now sits as an example of Victorian architecture. I wish I could have ended that sentence with "at its finest", but the sad yet interesting truth is that Binghamton's buildings have sat in an underfunded and dilapidated state for many years. This creates a sort of red-headed stepchild of towns like Cape May; a town that is chock full of fascinating buildings and homes but without the fresh coats of paint and people lining up to take pictures.

My goal is to take pictures of as many interesting buildings as I can. Every day I drive down streets and am washed with ideas on both sides of my car. Some are awaiting the wrecking ball, others sit tucked away, but all of them are worthy of being remembered. If you have any suggestions for buildings that you'd like to see, please get in touch with me. I do not plan to go in any particular order, but I will always include the address and whatever information I can about what I put together here.

This weekend I will be starting with a smattering of different buildings, soon moving on to some of the movie houses of the Southern Tier, both past and present.

PS - The image of the goose is just a test. Although I could start a new site about goose puppets if I get enough feedback.
